Brown Family Band

Pud would often make recordings of his music jobs, concerts and jam sessions.  One of which is of five unpublished tunes recorded in 1955 at the Royal Room, Hollywood and Las Palmas Street with Benny Goodman - clarinet, Ray Bauduc - drums, Amorty Corb - bass, Marvin Ash - piano, Charlie Teagarden - trumpet and Pud Brown- tenor sax.

1. Jazz Me Blues
2. That's A Plenty
3. Moon Glow
4. Shine
5. Sunny Side Of The Street

To play these sound clips you need the RealAudio Player and a 28.8 or better modem.

This recording exists because of unusual circumstances.  Jack Teagarden and his wife were having an argument. She got very angry with Jack and threw Jacks tape recorder at him.  The tape recorder was busted to pieces.  Jack knowing that Pud likes to fix things gave the recorder to Pud to fix who put it up stairs above the band stand and was working on it.  One night Benny Goodman came in and sat in on the set.  Pud realized this is a historical moment and runs upstairs and turns on the recorder hoping that it would play and left it running.  This recording is the result.  Because the machine was broken and Pud got it to barely work so it has some gaps and some distortion.

This is a rare recording where Benny Goodman was with his friends, relaxed, stretched out and was jamming.

Telescriptions

Produced by Louis Snader in the 1950s, Pud appeared in three-and-a-half minute short films of musical performances that were marketed to television stations for use in variety shows or as filler material.

Over 1200 diverse musical performances shot between 1949 - 1954, including popular singers such as Gail Storm, Teresa Brewer, Peggy Lee and Mel Torme, as well as country music legends, vaudeville personalities and Black artists such as Nat King Cole, Count Basie and Sarah Vaughn. Historic Films currently holds the 35mm negative.

In 1952, the Snaders were sold to Studio Films, Inc., which also produced its own music shorts from 1952-54.  Many of the jazz-related Snader and Studio Telescriptions were assembled into feature-length films for release to theaters under such titles as Basin Street Revue and Jazz Festival.  They were also assembled into thirty-minute compilations for television under the series title Showtime at the Apollo.  Both the Soundies and Telescriptions have been frequently recycled in recent years in various other guises for cable television and home video.
